In 2024, we will witness a rare and significant astronomical event – a Major Lunar Standstill, which occurs every 19 years. During this phenomenon, the moon will rise and set at its furthest points along the horizon. This unique alignment has sparked discussions about potential connections between the standstill and the layout of Stonehenge. Notably, Stonehenge was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, recognizing its outstanding universal value.
To commemorate this extraordinary occasion, Stonehenge will host a series of events that delve into lunar beliefs from various cultures, including those from China. The Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) is honoured to be invited to organize the Chinese Moon Festival celebration at Stonehenge on Sunday, 15th September 2024.

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival at Stonehenge on September 15, 2024!
Join us for a special Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at the iconic Stonehenge! This year, we’re taking the festivities to a whole new level with a trip to this ancient site, where we’ll enjoy traditional Chinese performances under the full moon.

- Performance at Stonehenge visitor centre: 2pm-3:30pm
- Performance in the Monument Field: 4:30pm-6pm

Event Highlights:
- Dragon and Lion Dances: Watch these vibrant and energetic performances that bring good luck and prosperity.
- Chinese Music & Dance: Enjoy the melodic tunes and graceful movements of traditional Chinese music and dance.
- Kung Fu & Tai Chi Demonstrations: Witness the power and precision of martial arts, showcasing the beauty of Chinese culture.
- Monkey King Sun Wukong, portrayed by a performer in traditional costume, will lead the dragon parade.
- Moon Goddess Chang’e, portrayed by a performer in traditional costume, will do a dance.
