The Chinese Association of Southampton’s Grand Display of Chinese Culture at the Southampton Mela Was a Resounding Success

The Chinese Association of Southampton participated in the Southampton Mela on July 13, showcasing a vibrant array of Chinese cultural experiences to the audience. Despite occasional rain, the event was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic support from the organizer Art Asia, and numerous participants. The weather did not dampen the lively atmosphere of the event.

The Chinese Association of Southampton’s impressive performances drew considerable attention and appreciation from the audience. The event kicked off with a grand parade featuring a golden Chinese dragon, the Rajhastan Heritage brass band, and the massive Nut Khut puppet, which marched from Westquay to Hoglands Park. During the parade, the golden dragon danced gracefully to Indian music, captivating onlookers with its vibrant movements, while the Nut Khut puppet, with its enormous size and unique design, attracted many curious gazes. Spectators along the route and at Hoglands Park were deeply engaged by this visual and auditory feast, often stopping to watch and cheer enthusiastically. Many people took out their phones to capture these memorable moments, making the parade a highlight of the day with its joyful and energetic atmosphere. Performers impressed the audience with their professional skills and passionate displays, making this parade a standout feature of the event.

At the event site, volunteers from the Chinese Association of Southampton and the University of Southampton Confucius Institute offered a variety of traditional Chinese cultural workshops, including Chinese chess, calligraphy, clay modeling, and drumming. These workshops attracted many participants eager to experience Chinese culture firsthand. The Chinese chess workshop introduced local residents to this ancient strategy game, with volunteers patiently teaching them the rules and strategies. In the calligraphy workshop, participants used brushes and rice paper to learn basic calligraphy techniques, experiencing the unique beauty of Chinese characters through each stroke. The clay modeling workshop allowed participants to create traditional clay figurines and crafts, showcasing the intricate skills of Chinese traditional crafts. The drumming workshop gave attendees the chance to experience the excitement of playing traditional Chinese drums, feeling the rhythm and energy of Chinese percussion music.


These workshops not only provided opportunities for hands-on practice but also enhanced understanding and interest in Chinese culture through interactive experiences. On the Community Stage, the Chinese Association of Southampton and the Wutan Martial Arts team delivered a captivating performance of dance and martial arts, earning enthusiastic applause and praise. The dance performance blended traditional and modern elements, with dancers elegantly portraying the rich heritage and unique charm of Chinese culture. The classical dance, with its graceful and refined movements, showcased a high level of artistry and cultural depth. The subsequent martial arts performance captivated the audience with displays of traditional techniques, including long fist and southern saber. The performers executed powerful and dynamic moves with precision, demonstrating the strength and majesty of Chinese martial arts, particularly with the southern saber’s swift and robust techniques.


At the World Stage, the music team from the Chinese Association of Southampton enchanted the audience with a series of beautiful Chinese musical performances featuring the flute, Chinese drums, and guzheng. The melodies captivated the audience, highlighting the unique allure of Chinese music. The flutist performed with skillful technique, playing tunes that ranged from exuberant to melodious. The Chinese drum performance added a powerful and passionate element, with resonant beats that moved each listener. The perfect combination of guzheng and Chinese drums created a distinctive musical effect, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in a sea of music. Additionally, a young girl played “Liuyang River” on the guzheng, her proficient skill and heartfelt performance deeply engaging the audience and drawing enthusiastic applause.




The Chinese Association of Southampton and the Wutan Martial Arts team also presented a distinctive performance in the park square, featuring tai chi, traditional martial arts, and a subject three dance. The tai chi performance began with gentle, slow, and fluid movements, with performers showcasing the unique blend of softness and strength in tai chi. The traditional martial arts performance elevated the atmosphere with its dynamic displays of various techniques, including long fist, swordplay, fan martial arts, and staff skills. The performers executed powerful and elegant routines, demonstrating the versatility and artistry of martial arts. The subject three dance also received enthusiastic reactions, with its synchronized and powerful movements showcasing the team’s excellent coordination and artistic potential. Many spectators actively participated in the dance, experiencing this energetic performance form firsthand.
